Introduction to Water Skills

The objective is develop confidence and independence in the water, learn general and deep-end water safety. Techniques taught include the forward and backward movement, safe entry and exit and personal water safety.

 

Entries & Exits1. Slide-in entry
2. Exit using ladder and from pool edge
Sculling & Body Orientation 1. Front float (mushroom or jellyfish) for 5 seconds, recover to standing position
2. Back float for 5 seconds, recover to standing position
Underwater Skills Submerge in waist deep (student's) water, open eyes and blow bubbles.
Movement/Swimming/Strokes 1. Movement on front for 10 metres (alternating arms and legs and/or simultaneous arms and legs)
2. Movement on the back for 5 metres (alternating arms and legs and/or simultaneous arms and legs)
Survival & Activity skills 1. Signal distress and call for help
2. Grasp a flotation aid and float with it for 10 seconds
3. Then move (with the float) to the pool's edge and exit safely from the water
4. Dressed in swimwear, t-shirt and shorts, demonstrate:
- Correctly fit a PFD
- Jump into the water
- Float for 30 seconds
- Climb out of deep water

Knowledge1. Rules of behaviour in, on or near the water
2. Water safety knowledge at a swimming pool
3. Water safety rules in various aquatic environments
4. Principles of personal safety and survival
5. Principles of water craft safety
6. Recognising an emergency
7. Principles when performing a rescue
