Fundamental Water Skills

General skill development including unassisted step entry into water, sculling, feet first surface dives, personal water safety skills as well as water safety in aquatic environments. Goal is to achieve 25 metres of continuous swimming.


Entries & Exits1. Perform a step-in entry
Sculling & Body Orientation 1. Front float (mushroom or jellyfish) for 10 seconds, recover to standing position
2. Back float for 10 seconds, recover to standing position
3. Swim 5 metres on front, rollover and continue swimming 5 metres on back
4. Scull, float or tread water for 30 seconds (incorporated in Survival and Activity Skills)
Underwater Skills 1. Search for and recover an object in chest deep (student's) water
2. Demonstrate a feet-first surface dive in chest deep water
Movement/Swimming/Strokes 1. Movement on front for 25 metres (front crawl or breaststroke)
2. Movement on back for 15 metres (backstroke or survival backstroke)
Survival & Activity skills 1. Scull, float or tread water for 30 seconds
2. Dressed in swimwear, t-shirt and shorts, demonstrate:
- Swim for 15 metres using any survival stroke
- Swim to pool edge and climb out
- Put on an appropriately sized PFD and jump into the water (at least 1.4 metres deep)
- Swim for 25 metres with PFD
- Climb out of the water

Knowledge1. Rules of behaviour in, on or near the water
2. Water safety knowledge at a swimming pool
3. Water safety rules in various aquatic environments
4. Principles of personal safety and survival
5. Principles of water craft safety
6. Recognising an emergency
7. Principles when performing a rescue
