Personal & Stroke Development Skills

Principles of personal survival as well as basic rescue skills are taught. Skills include sculling, underwater skills and the use of personal flotation device. Goal is to achieve 50m of continuous swimming.


Entries & ExitsPerform a stride/straddle entry
Sculling & Body Orientation 1. Scull head-first on the back for 5 metres
2. Scull, float or tread water for 1 minute (incorporated in Survival and Activity Skills)
Underwater Skills In chest deep water swim through hoops on pool bottom 2 metres apart.
Movement/Swimming/Strokes 1. Swim 50 metres continuously - 25 metres front crawl and 25 metres backstroke
2. Swim 25 metres breaststroke and 25 metres survival backstroke
Survival & Activity skills 1. Scull, float or tread water for 1 minute
2. Dressed in swimwear, t-shirts and shorts, demonstrate:
- Swim for 25 metres to a PFD
- Correctly fit a PFD in water
- Swim for 50 metres with PFD
- Climb out of the water
Rescue Skills Nil
Knowledge1. Rules of behaviour in, on or near the water
2. Water safety knowledge at a swimming pool
3. Water safety rules in various aquatic environments
4. Principles of personal safety and survival
5. Principles of water craft safety
6. Recognising an emergency
7. Principles when performing a rescue
